Democratic vs Republican views of the role of government…
The Senate has passed Biden’s $1.9 trillion “American Rescue Plan” COVID bill. Vote was 50 Democrats vs 49 Republicans. Just like Trump’s 2017 tax cut of $1.5–2.3 trillion was all Republicans, no Democrats. The Trump bill cut corporate taxes permanently and individual taxes temporarily, benefiting mostly the rich. The Biden bill benefits the poor and middle class, especially those affected by COVID.
This highlights the Democratic vs Republican views of the role of government:
- Republicans: Small government. Fewer services. Lower taxes for rich.
- Democrats: Big government. More services. Higher taxes for rich.
The “Liberal consensus” was embraced by both parties from 1933 to 1981
(FDR through Jimmy Carter). Reagan changed to “Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”
